Indigo

He dyes fabric a deep blue, and squads a shade of nothing at all.

« Three baths, three checks. The night only forgives careful people. »
Indigo

Where he comes from

Indigo comes from the Industrial Zone, from a dye works wedged between two warehouses, where he ran the night shift because the vats don’t like being rushed and neither does he. Years of baths, rinses and ruined batches marbled his hands blue and taught him the only chemistry that matters: the exact color of shadow at three in the morning. It isn’t black. Everyone thinks it’s black. That’s why everyone gets caught.

The official night found him by accident: a squad took refuge in his workshop with a dragnet on its heels. He walked them in among the hangings, switched off the bulb, and served tea while the patrols hunted silhouettes that no longer existed. The next day, three Houses wanted his address. He chose the one that wiped its feet on the way in.

How he works

His cunning is precision chemistry: he preps an operation like a vat bath, by dose, by thermometer, by stopwatch. Squads that pass through his workshop come out one shade darker than the night, and the door spotters’ eyes slide over them without catching. You don’t become invisible, he corrects: you become uninteresting. It holds up far better.

He trains the new guys in the art of going unseen: the walk, the breathing, the color of stillness. His worrying is part of the method — he rehearses every catastrophe in advance, plans an exit for every exit, and triple-checks what needs no checking at all. His students tease him gently, then notice one detail: on his operations, nobody has ever had to run. Walking is enough, when everything is dyed properly.

What keeps him standing

What keeps him standing: his hands. For years he wore gloves to hide the blue marbling; he stopped the day a recruit looked at them the way you look at medals. Now they stay bare, resting on the raw linen of his jacket, telling the trade better than he does. His dream is a vat-room secret: a perfect blue nobody has named yet, and one night — just one — when an entire House would cross the city without leaving a single witness to say it passed.

Her school

Creature of the Night

The dancefloor school has no manual: it has a tempo. You learn to read a room like weather — when it climbs, when it stalls, when to cut the bass so they beg for more. You learn to vanish in a strobe and reappear exactly where you want. What you lose: mornings, permanently, and a little sense of the week. You know a Night Creature by her dark glasses at four a.m. — not a pose: a prescription. And by the fact that the cash follows the beat.

Her temperament

The Worrier

She checks the till, the emergency exit and the weather three times; her disasters never happen, simply because she cancelled them all in advance… and she needs to hear you say so.
