Cherry

Her laugh cuts through walls — within an hour, even the bouncer cracked… and so did the till

« If you don’t laugh, you pay double. House rule. My house. »
Cherry

Where she comes from

Cherry did her training at her uncle’s karaoke bar, in the Suburbs, an establishment where courage is measured in verses. Behind the bar she learned the school of the counter: first names, orders, heartbreaks — plus one elective, the art of getting a shy man on stage while letting him believe it was his idea. The regulars came to murder songs; they stayed for her. The night a House rented out the room and Cherry got two rival Bosses singing in a round, somebody realized they were looking at a phenomenon. She followed. The mic she left behind: she’d rather make other people sing.

How she works

She can turn a funeral at the counter into a birthday party, in two rounds and three well-placed jokes. Her smile is a documented phenomenon: at the karaoke bar she discovered that a fit of laughter spreads faster than a rumor, and she made it a work tool. Wherever she serves, the mood climbs a notch — colleagues last longer into the night, customers forgive the wait, the whole team catches itself humming. Her banter does the rest: she can sell a whole evening with one well-placed question.

She knows her limit: when things go truly sideways — a real brawl, a curtain about to fall — the smile comes unhooked and she moves behind the counter, shelter side, and lets the sturdy ones handle it. Her real talent is keeping it from going sideways in the first place. Upstream. One round of drinks at a time.

What keeps her standing

A fake cockroach in the register, a real fit of laughter in the team: at four in the morning, she’s the one keeping everybody standing. She watches morale the way others watch the books — she knows before anyone when a colleague is coming unraveled, and the evening reorganizes itself around her without anyone understanding how. To the new girls she teaches the two repertoires: the jokes that defuse, the jokes that ignite, and above all never mix them up. She swaps her best ones with Peaches, to be repaid in kind. Her big project: a wall of photos of the greatest nights. It’s already full. She wants a second wall. If you don’t laugh with her, you miss the best of the trade — and half the tips.

Her school

Counter Queen

The bar is a school of memory and patience. You learn first names, orders, heartbreaks; the art of turning a stranger into a regular and a regular into family. Above all you learn to listen — really, wiping a glass, never looking like you’re waiting for the end. What you lose: your evenings, and the illusion that people are complicated. You know a Counter Queen by this: she wipes what’s already clean, remembers your order from two years ago, and closes the till without looking… while you’re looking at her.

Her temperament

The Prankster

She slips a fake cockroach in the till and a real laugh into the crew; at four in the morning, she’s the one holding everyone up… and the Boss slightly on edge, in the good way.
